Maxiatures
My Maxiatures series uses the tradition of the Persian miniature as a dialogic critique /look at the entrenched positions separating the Western and Muslim world. By modifying each miniature, I create new stories which depict the everyday life of the Islamic world. A world which like any other world is continuously in conflict between old and new values. I insert contemporary details into historical fiction, thus creating new fictions.
By interjecting modern photographic figures into these idealized scenes, I attempt to interrupt these perfectly constructed settings. This intervention occurs on two levels: that of the medium, whereby photography intervenes in the tradition of meticulously painted miniatures and also on the level of the incongruous and at times humorous narrative. |
